HobbyResolution2024 / Ovelist24 Challenge

gaarew's 2024 Ovelist

Well, it's been a while since I updated this, or youtube, or anything really, but life has been crazy, and I only really got back to painting about November.  I have done about 200 minis in the last 2 months, so, at least I've still got that low effort mass output thing going eh?

Figured I'd throw up a post covering my #hobbyresolution2024 or Ovelist24 plans for the coming year as it'll keep it all together and not get lost on a facebook group.

So... in a break from my standard painting/playing/hobby challenges, I've one for all painting this time, a bit of a variety of stuff over different scales, some small projects and some bigger ones.  Had to settle for 24, because I wanted a header image in the centre, and 8 projects didn't seem much.

Before I begin, I did spend a bit of time this year basically starting to catalogue my hobby, which is a bit of a Sisyphean task, I got a fair bit done, but still have probably thousands of figures to add to the master list.  After over 7300 minis accounted for (not touching most of my 15mm stuff, or the 6mm...) I figured I'd stop, take time to clear a few drawers and shelves, and slowly start filtering more over when there was space.  I've also added a load of shelves (still about 20 short) to my cabinets to hold the fruits of my labours.

So, 24 painting projects, here goes.

1. Age of Sigmar Nurgle Deamons

Sarah really wants to play AoS, and I picked her up a Cities army on release, and while I already have my Stonecast Eternals, I don't want to do loads of Order on Order battles, so, the plan is to paint up about 1000pts of Nurgle Deamons to play.  This is going to tie into another project, and the planned list is about 47 models.

2.  Malignant Sorcery.

We managed to get a copy cheap as the box was damaged, figured they would be useful for playing AoS, so I get to paint them.  I've also got an extra copy of the SoulSnare Shackles, so 20 models total.

3.  The Silver Bayonet

Got the Russian starter to paint up, 8 models, and hopefully the closest I'll ever get to Napoleonics.

4.  Moonstone

We played a demo at Carronade this year, Sarah really enjoyed it, and I absolutely hated the bluffing mechanic.  But I picked her up the starter, rulebook and some faeries for Christmas, so just grabbed a couple of boxes of Fauns that had cool minis for myself as a painting project.  6 models total, might expand on it with cool figs, but it's definately a painting project for me rather than a new game to get into.

5.  Godtear

The plan is to maintain fully painted status.  Grabbed most of the last 7 sets I needed to finish the range in the Steamforged Black Friday sale, and one from Amazon.  It's a fun game, that we bust out from time to time, can rattle the warbands out quick, and it's not too taxing.  44 models total.

6.  Of Gods & Mortals Norse.

Played this a couple of times in 15mm, but the plan is to get a 1200 point force done in 28mm.  I have a load of vikings ready, but I'll probably still try and do new figures for it, not like I have a shortage of Vikings to paint.  37 minis, including Odin, Dwarves and Trolls for fun.

7.  No One Knows

Leaving this open for something that is bound to pop up over the year.

8.  Xenos Rampant

Worked out a force to put my Vanguard Minis Defeat in Detail 15mm Tusculum Nova Siege Infantry to use.  Lots of footslogging light infantry plus support weapons, psykers, and a Leman Russ to boot, basing them off of a 2nd Edition 40k Imperial Guard army list.  47 minis.

9.  Warhammer 40,000 - Nurgle Deamons

To tie in with project 1, the plan of doing Deamons means they work in AoS and 40k, basically using the same list for the mos part, so it's only like another 3 minis to add.

10.  Stargrave Crew

Another purely painting project for the time being, I don't think I even own the rulebook.  Plan to paint up a couple of metal figures, and a couple of sprues worth of grunts.  It's played at the club sei regularly, so it won't hurt to have a gang ready.  12 figures total.

11.  Dragon Rampant

So, like any good hobbyist, with the advent of 3d printing, we immediatelty added thousands of stl's to the collection to complement the metal and plastic and resin hordes...  I have a pile of Duncan Shadow Luca ratmen printed out to organise into a playable Dragon Rampant army, because obviously, I need yet another DR force.  About 53 minis planned so far for options.

12.  Warhammer Underworlds.

Another Maintain Fully Painted Status challenge.  Finally caught up on this one, have painted every warband released (so far) with the exception of 2 starter box ones I missed.  Crrently, 0 models to paint.

13.  Relic Knights.

OK, maybe a weird choice.  Did play it years and years ago at the Vapnartak show in York, but it's mainly a painting project to clear a drawer out.  11 models.

14.  SAGA Age of Magic

One of two AoM forces planned for the year, using my 15mm scaled Forest Dragon Chaos minis.  I've cleared a load out this year, but the plan is to do at least 8pts plus a Warlord.  68 models.

15.  Oathmark (or some other square based Fantasy)

Another one from the pile that I have hundreds of minis for.  I keep wanting to do a square based fantasy army again, and this might be, because of the varied army building, fit the bill.  Over the years I've picked up the metal Copplestone Wood Elves from Fantasy Warriors with a view to doing an army for that, or maybe doing a Dogs of War style army, but Oathmark Elves is a relatively small force, that still leaves plenty of models to put on round lipped bases to match 90% of my collection.  31 models.

16.  SAGA Age of Magic.

The second AoM force, this time mainly using my Foundry Vikings, I had a load prepped and primed, so ties in with the OGAM force and clears more hairy dudes from the backlog.  58 models.

17.  Mordheim.  But Bigger.

Got Sarah to print me out an Artizan Guild Witch Hunter at about 60mm with the idea to paint up a Mordheim Warband but in a more Inquisitor scale (God, really aging myself now).  Might still put it on a round lipped base, but, not really an issue as I don't imagine many people are playing 60mm Mordheim.  1 figure so far, will expand if it's fun and/or looks cool.

18.  Of Gods and Mortals Celts.

Well, Sarah is gonna need a force to play, so I'll just do that too seeing as I have the SPQR box of Celts still to paint, and more dark age fantasy style stuff will come in useful.   42 figures planned, but not sure I need to paint more Wardogs as I have loads already.

19.  Age of Sigmar Stonecast Eternals.

I've had the Dominion box sitting since release so I figure I'd better get that painted up.  21 figures, and a decent chunk of army that I might push to aim for 1500 points of new recruits.

20.  A Song of Ice & Fire.

Another  Maintain Fully Painted Status challenge.  Got what I had finished off this year again, got 3 boxes of stuff on order, so another 33 or so models to do, and probably a couple more boxes to order once the Giant Spear Throwers are released.

21.  Daisho

Big fan of this, played a few times at the club.  Plan to do the Sohei Monk warband box from Ronin, to give me my own force to play either of those games.  8 models.

22.  Dreadfleet.

So, at great personal expense, Sarah picked this up for me years ago, so I feel I really should get to it, it's probably one of the lower count 'board' games I have, so 34 various minis including terrain.

23.  No One Knows.

As before.

24.  Warmaster

So, I've done 6mm Beastmen and 10mm Vampire Counts in previous years.  Need to do a 2nd army in either scale, so too advantage of the Black Gate offer to pick up an Ogre army, to add to the few packs I already had.  47 various characters and stands, not counting individual models for this.

So, there we have it 24 (well, currently 22) painting challenges for the year ahead.  I'll be happy to get 12 done to be honest, no idea how life is going to be over the next 12 months, so I want to get a good chunk done ASAP while my mojo is still hanging around.  According to my spreadsheet, it's currently 631 miniatures (or stands) of the aforementioned 7300+ so, a bit shy of 10%, but who knows how hard I'll go at it.  There is some space for new projects, which might be new releases, or just other stuff pulled from the stash, kinda want a bit more small scale stuff on there, maybe more 6mm sci-fi or 15mm fantasy, so, we'll see.  Listening to the Hobby Support Group podcast also has me thinking about a winter German army for Bolt Action/Konflict 47, as Sarah has some winter Russians already.

I might also try and shoe these into the Plastic Crack Podcast challenges, but as I seem to works in fits and bursts, I might end up doing a few months at a time over the various armies and just submitting them at the appropriate time.

So yeah, that's the plan, still got a load to prep and prime, and probably more shelves to install in the cabinets to make room for them.

Fingers Crossed.

All the best,

J
