Project: Shieldwall

Project: Shieldwall is my long term plan to paint up (and game with) a huge Viking army built up from a multitude of manufacturers.  And by huge, I mean painting at least one of every sculpt in the range.  Don't do things by half, right?

There are definitely a few manufacturers where I will be doing that, and probably a bunch more where I'll pull suitable figures to bulk out the ranks.  I'm sure I'll draft in a few suitable Dark Age era figures that aren't strictly speaking Vikings, as well as some of the more barbaric looking fantasy figures that catch my eye.  Actually, I reckon 1600 infantry would be pretty cool, purely because that is how many it would take to cover my 4'x4' battle mat with them all on 30mm lipped bases.

Currently I have a huge amount of Wargames Foundry Vikings, purchased way back when they still did the horde deals and 1st edition Warhammer Ancient Battles was pretty new.  I never made much headway with them, and they followed me through many moves over the years.  I finally got around to painting up enough of them to play a Hearthguard heavy Jomsviking force for SAGA in 2019 and the idea for Project: Shieldwall was born.

Since then, I've picked up the entire range of both Artizan Designs and Footsore Miniatures Vikings, along with making a start on Bad Squiddo, V&V Miniatures and Warlord Games.  Next up will probably be the Crusader Miniatures range and a set of the Victrix plastics.  I've also painted up a few more of the Foundry models, as well as enough of the Footsore ones to play a Viking list in SAGA.

Gameswise, I'll be looking to play SAGA (both Age of Vikings and Age of Magic) and the collection should eventually be able to cover a variety of battleboards (Vikings and Jomsvikings already done), I'll also be using them for a number of the Osprey Wargames books, Dux Bellorum, Of Gods & Mortals and Lion and Dragon Rampant, along with Ragnarok and possibly Oathmark, and Dux Britanniarum from Too Fat Lardies and the Ministry's Blood Eagle.  I'll probably also give Warlords or Erehwon and God of Battles a shot too.
