Month in Review - May 2021
Well, been a while since I updated this, but I have been busy with real life stuff, yet, thankfully, I've put some time in over May to bust out a lot of minis. Not fully caught up yet, but made good headway into outstanding challenges.
First up, #talesofinstahammer, managed 6 units of Ethereal Hosts, 2 Vampires, 2 Necromancers, a Vampire on Zombie Dragon and a Vampire in Black Coach. Still have 4 units of Black Knights part done, and 4 units of Zombies, 2 units of Ghouls and the Von Carstein nobility to be my General (the Vlad and Isabella figures I did this month, but on the same base).
Next up, #heerschau2021, managed to get my Levy unit done for May, and done a bit of catch up, getting 12 warriors with crossbows blocked in and washed, and getting some hearthguard and my warlord assembled and primed. Hopefully can get this caught up in June.
I did knock out my Blood Bowl team, just another exercise in contrast paints really, and it went in a totally different direction than I had envisioned. I had originally planned Black and Orange for the team colours, but ended up going with Red and Black. For the Ogres anyway, I figure nobody expects the Gnoblars to last very long, so they just get sent out onto the field wearing whatever rags they turned up with on.
Also caught up with my monthly fun minis, a bit of a mixed bag, a prototype Norse Dwarf from Foundry from years ago, the Road Warrior from Copplestone/North Star, another Frostgrave character and a Lucid Eye Cro Magnon.
Also knocked out a couple more Warhammer Underworlds warbands, keeping me on track for the year to this point. Morgwaeth's Blade Coven and the Dread Pageant, I have the Purifier's part done, and the Karahadrin Overlords assembled. Still haven't picked up any of the season 4 warbands yet though.
So, yeah, that's it for May, not a bad output to get back into it I guess. Nearly at the halfway point of the year, so I'm going to have to get my finger out to get to where I want to be overall.
Stay safe people, and hopefully I'll be back soon with an update for the middle of the year.
Cheers,
John

Month in Review - May 2020
Well, another month been and gone, and I definitely took it easy in May. A grand total of 8 minis painted this month, a drop in the ocean compared to previous efforts, but, I'm still on track to beat last years output.
There are a number of reasons I slowed down this month, feeling a bit burnt out from nearly 2 months of constant painting, being back at work, the heat, working in the garden, and Sarah taking up residence in the games room while working from home. I've also been doing some assembly, so was working downstairs for that anyway.
I painted up a unit of Invokers for the #talesofinstahammer challenge seeing as the theme was magic, and supplemented them with Stormsire's Cursebreakers which also knocked off another Warhammer Underworlds warband.

I also made a start on more reinforcements for SAGA/Lion Rampant, but going back to work scunnered that... |

| Dark Age Infantry/Medieval Archers (Conquest Games) |
In terms of non-painting hobby, I've assembled 2 sprues worth of Wargames Atlantic Dark Age Irish to do a review, along with more Foundry Vikings (2pts of Warriors with various hand weapons, and a point of Levy with Javelins) although I decided to give most of the Levy spears as they had helmets and I'll fill out the unit with more bareheaded ones and possibly some Crusader Miniatures sculpts. I also based and primed the 3 Oathmark Dwarf Champions, the limited edition alt Ranger from the Rangers of Shadowdeep book and an old Grenadier Barbarian shaman from ebay (another Copplestone sculpt I think) along with 8 Footsore Norman Crossbowmen (the unarmoured ones) to give me 1pt for SAGA and 2/3rds of the unit I need for the club Lion Rampant campaign.

| These new Dwarfs are almost as tall as the old Vikings... |
Picked up/made a few random orders for stuff too, some boring necessities like lipped bases, and, thanks to a Northstar flash sale, all the remaining sets of SAGA dice.

Final numbers then? Gaming and events has obviously taken a big hit for the year, hopefully I can get those numbers up when things go back to normal (and I can bust out all my new painted armies)

#workbenchWednesday 10/07/19
Slightly delayed because stuff that ended up with me sleeping like 12hrs straight... Hey, at least I got a rest.
Workbench is busy.
Obviously moar Vikings on the go, 2 points of Berserkers for Saga Age of Magic, along with a unit of Oathmark Dwarves for my Of Gods & Mortals force. I've also made a start on a Mantic Troll for that too, but it is such a horrendous sculpt, that I think I'm looking for some alternative models to use.
Just not keen on the ridiculous size of the hands and shoulders compared to the tiny legs. Plus the mould lines are bad. Back to the drawing board with them.. If anyone has any ideas about decent Troll figures with a Norse/Dark Age vibe, let me know. Especially if they will fit on 40mm bases.
Sidelines are still full of Cephalyx, I'll get to them soon, just really want to finish the Berserkers to have 8pts for Age of Magic, and the Grymkin stuff. Spoken to my boy Devon in the States about getting more pill bottle lids to have more stuff ready to go on the side, which means I can start a new unit whilst the newly finished ones are drying/waiting basing stuff.
Finally, just off the workbench, a unit of 12 Viking Archers, mixed feelings about them. Paintwise, I like them, I went a little heavier on red and yellow than normal, partly because it helps me get over painting them (it hasn't been too bad) and partly to keep them from blending in too much to my Norman Archers, though the beards definitely help. The mixed feelings arise from the fact I didn't string the bows, but the test one I did with a spare Frostgrave bow snapped over time, and I figured the metal would just bend. Plus, a few of the other Archer sculpts are holding the bows at an angle that doesn't lend itself to stringing them. Finally, painted 12 guys, and only 4 count for my Paint All The Vikings project, as well as my #hobbyresolution2019 project. Still, 12 models added to the painted tally, so all is not for naught.
In other news, finally put some models on the table and rolled dice, blooding my Jomsvikings vs. my Normans, commanded by Sarah. Played the basic scenario to get back into the swing of things, obviously been a while since either of us played, plus it was our first time running our prospective forces. We called it partway through the 5th turn after a glorious charge from the Mounted Norman Warlord bounced off my hardy Jomsviking Warlord, and he was swiftly cut down.
The Wrath mechanic is definitely interesting, a bit damned if you do, damned if you don't when it comes to forcing your opponent to choose what they let you do. I'm interested to do more testing with it, although, I think I need to bulk out my force a bit with some Warriors.
So, plan over the next week is to get the Berserkers and Dwarves finished and ready to play. I'm going to carry the viking colours over to the Dwarves, as they will fight alongside them, rather than replicate the half and half uniform I started when I painted the metals. Lazy I know, but should work out better overall, they are a Fantasy Dark Age force after all.
That's it for now then, see you next week.
Cheers,
John

Month in Review - May 2019
Well, I guessed I missed the April update... and quite a few other posts...
It's been a strange time recently. The good weather has forced me outside to do some much needed renovations on the garden, and I kinda lost my routine of hobbying. I have a feeling that Assassins Creed Odyssey didn't help, after racking up well over 100hrs playtime in the first 3 weeks of owning it...
So... numbers?
Since my last update I have played 11 games of Warmachine (2 before the Welsh Masters, 7 at Welsh, and 2 when we dropped in to the Durham Raiders club whilst visiting the in-laws) Went 3-4 at Welsh (mainly due to a battery issue last round) but I'm okay with that having not played since Belgian Masters, and it was mainly a chance for me to try out the newer models that I'd painted up for it.
Paintingwise, I've done a unit of Chosen of Everblight for one of the Welsh lads, 2 Clockatrice, Baron Tonguelick and the King of Nothing for my Grymkin, and since Welsh, the Sepulchral Guard skeleton warband for Shadespire that I picked up when we were away. It just so happened that I sprained/twisted my wrist setting up Carronade, so it put paid to painting up all the new Grymkin releases for a Bump list, but I'll get to them seeing as I did get the majority primed.
Ran APRIL FUEL DAZE 3! - 23 fully painted pairs of armies (and they said it couldn't be done) and as far as I'm aware, a good time was had by all. Konrad retained his champion shield. Possibly out of spite after mumbling about having to hand it back.
Went to Carronade - picked up Thud & Blunder, the SAGA Age of Magic rules and spell cards, the newest Copplestone 15mm packs (Ice Tribe Barbarian and Giant) and snagged a giant KR bag to hopefully house all of my Grymkin (it holds 4 standard cases).
So, the future... I... don't know. Genuinely, I have no real plan or direction right now, nothing to aim for (eyes #hobbyresolutions suspiciously) I'm sitting here at 3am, listening to the rain, on my 3rd coffee in as many hours, as my sleeping pattern has been a nightmare recently, there is the 30+ Cephalyx models to get done for Sean, and they are currently joined with the new Grymkin releases that I'd managed to fight through pinning and priming, and a bunch of the Foundry Vikings that I'd primed but need a few touch ups on the underside. The shelves by my desk are already crammed with other primed models, so, maybe getting as much built and primed was a bad idea (not sure based on weather). So, I dunno, I'm sure I'll find something to batter on with.
Until next time,
John

#workbenchWednesday 20/03/19 (delayed)
Slightly late this week as adulting got in the way over the last two days...
Workbench currently looks like this -
![]() |
| Kinda sparse, right? |
The last 6 of the Ral Partha Europe Blighthaven miniatures waiting on a wash drying, then just highlights and layers and stuff to finish the full job off. The end is in sight. I've already finished up the Town Guard set, and the first 4 Heroes from this pack.
![]() |
| DH007 - Town Guard (Ral Partha Europe) |
The stout hearted men of Blighthaven, resplendent in their 'official' colours. Well, that's my claim at least seeing as these are for the webstore. I went with a bright green and white colour combination to evoke the 'Blight' and 'Haven' of the name, along with a selection of drab browns and linen to represent more simple, hardwearing clothing. No decals this time, all the shields were hand painted.
I've also finished off the first 4 minis (for the mathematically challenged) from the Questing Hero pack, mainly because I was using a lot of the same colours as the Town Guard, so seemed less wasteful.

| Pretty sure one of the two groups here is better equipped to deal with things that go bump in the night... |
Gamingwise, managed another 3 games since last week. Thursday night we headed over to Jimboba's for drinks and games and a catch-up, resulting in me being able to cross 2 more board games off the #hobbyresolution2019 list, (Zombicide: Black Plague and Mythic Battles: Pantheon) as well as indulging in a lot of planning for gaming ideas for the future. Mostly 15mm, but he was desperately trying to sneak some individually based and magnetised 6mm in there too...
![]() |
| Shortly before the TPK... |
![]() |
| Hail Hydra! |
I also managed a third game, this time versus Sam, when I was dropping off his warband at the club. We played A Song of Blades & Heroes, a special scenario involving collecting explosive barrels. The cowardly sniping of my Leader saw a cascading morale failure which turned into an all out rout of my warband. So much for being Fearless Barbarians...
![]() |
| 'Barrelling' forward... |
![]() |
| Plumed assailant kebabs defenceless lady. 732 Colourised. |
Moving forwards, we are looking at playing more ASoB&H, then using those warbands to try out Dragon Rampant (or Hero Rampant if you will, using one figure per unit) before expanding to full DR armies, then making them playable for other games like God of Battles, Warlords of Erehwon and SAGA: Age of Magic when it is releases next month. I'll pick up Thud & Blunder too (probably at Carronade) and that'll add another set of rules to try. So I've been building up my Beastmen in preparation.
We are also planning more boardgaming, with Rising Sun being on the agenda for the next meet-up, although I'm obviously going to try and sneak Blood Rage and Chaos in the Old World in too.
So yeah, that's it really. I have something I 'wood' like to talk about, but I'll save that for it's own post.
Cheers,
John

#workbenchWednesday 06/02/19
Another week, another update.
Workbench currently has the following on it, which is to say, Sam's Warband for A Song of Blades and Heroes and my Copplestone Picts for Hordes of the Things. There is also a stand that I painted last year to get some repairs as I'd dropped it getting it out the cabinet for the big end of year photoshoot...
I've had a productive week really. Washed and cleaned up the worms for the Hordes of the Things elements and sanded and textured movement trays for my Dragon Rampant army. Speaking of which, I started painting that on Friday and finished it up yesterday, clearing off one of my #hobbyresolution2019 projects completely.
I had a lot of fun doing these guys, super quick paint job and just covering them in loads of effects. If I was to do more, I'd probably trim down or remove the sculpted foliage in order to stop them getting super bulky. Figures are all from Ral Partha Europe from the Demonworld line. The entire force is made up of 1 x (4234) Giant Tree Shepherd , 2 x (4323) Tree Shepherds, and 4 packs of (4607) Shrublings. All in it was less than £60, and I probably didn't need some of the Shrublings, as I fudged the army list to fit them in.
Army List I'm planning is -
Giant Tree Shepherd - Greater Warbeast/Spore - 8pts
3 Tree Shepherds - Lesser Warbeast/Spore - 6pts
3 Tree Shepherds - Lesser Warbeast/Spore - 6pts
12 Shrublings - Ravening Horde/Venom/Fearful - 2pts
12 Shrublings - Ravening Horde/Venom/Fearful - 2pts
Now, I know that the Shrublings shouldn't have Fearful, but it keeps the points down, and as I'll only really be playing folk from the club, I'm sure nobody is really going to care. I'll adjust them as necessary after some test games.
In other news, went down to Vapnartak in York on Sunday with the club. Picked up What a Tanker! L'art de la Guerre, and the Rebels & Patriots rulebooks, along with some order dice from Warlord, and some Bones figures and more 15mm Celts/Gauls from Forged in Battle. Also, my HATE kickstarter arrived, but, upon opening, I realised it wasn't mine, and was actually for someone with a similar name... Hopefully that gets sorted.
Plan for the next few days is get the worms and bases primed, and get through the HotT Elements and Sam's warband. I also have to get started on my #talesofinstahammer stuff for the month. Think I'm doing some Black Knights, as I have the models and it saves me buying Dire Wolves. The secret challenge is to paint up one or more Hero models, but I already did 3 last month...
Rainer made some sweet collages for everyone's entries for the January Secret Challange, which I'll share here too.
That's it for the week then, hopefully I'll have more painted minis to show off next week.
Cheers,
John

#workbenchWednesday 16/01/19
Back again with a lot to go over this week.
Current #hobbystreak 16.
First up, the workbench shots, that's why you are here right? Well, sleeping pattern is shot as usual so it has changed considerably over the course of the day. Got in from work and it looked like this -
Which means the side looked/looks like this -
So, after starting the Wraiths yesterday, I basically got everything done bar the basing, curse varnish drying times, but, still, they've taken me to just over 100 minis painted this year, so... on track to hit 200 for the month. Pretty sure that covers Impact! for the #talesofinstahammer theme. The paint job is super quick and lazy, and ties them in with the rest of my Undead/Draugr stuff. Quite like the sculpts, although the heads are a bit on the small side, but if memory serves, they were one of the first Mantic resin/plastic hybrid kits, and nobody knew how much the sculpts would shrink in the manufacturing process.
You'll notice that there is a load of paint sitting there too, basically I rearranged the workstation a bit to get all the Army Painter ones within easy reach, rather than languishing in a case, so I had to jiggle the Foundry and P3 ones around. I used the bottom step to hold all the GW texture and drybrush paints, as I won't be transferring them to dropper bottles. Managed to clear out a few of the duplicates from the AP ones, seeing as they rename some colours for different sets.
In other news, the orders arrived from Northstar and The Outpost and I managed to find the Goblin army, so now have the Trolls to complete my OG&M list, they are a lot smaller than I imagine them, so they might get changed out for alternatives in future, although, not the new Games Workshop ones, not for any reason other than they don't fit the aesthetic, although I do love the new sculpts.
Still waiting on my worms turning up for my Hordes of the Things elements, but it's fine because I'm pushing the 28mm stuff this month. I'm hoping to get to them next month, along with more pre-release stuff for 4A Miniatures, if Andy posts it, and a Blighthaven Warband commission for Sam of 15mm Skirmish Supplies.
Speaking of which, got my first game of Advanced Song of Blades & Heroes with Sam and Sarah, my hastily cobbled together Copplestone Northlanders vs. his Dwarves and Sarah's borrowed Undead.
We played a very basic game to get an understanding of the rules, which was basically a big fight in the middle of the table with some loot counters spaced out equidistant from each force. My Barbarian Warmage was a poor commander choice, or maybe she was just protesting at being included in a force with some gaming standard paintjobs, but, she did almost nothing the entire game. Ultimately the Dwarves were wiped out in full, well, one routed from the table to tell his friends about the massacre, and the Undead managed to grab some loot and drag it off the board.
Obviously the upshot of this is that now I want to paint a load more 15mm fantasy. But I have to be strong. For the remainder of this month at least. Then I can get on with the HotT and Dragon Rampant stuff.
Should get a fair bit of work done on the Zombies tomorrow, and hopefully have them finished by the end of the weekend. At least the 40 after them are mainly just the half body sculpts.
Until next time.
Cheers,
John

Cheers,
John

#workbenchWednesday 09/07/19
On the workbench, just started another batch of 30 zombies, with another 30, a Necromancer, some Wraiths, more Grave Markers and my Copplestone 15mm Picts off to the side ready to go with bases drybrushed and rims repainted. It's been a while, years in fact, since I did some real intensive batch painting, so, part of me is considering trying to beat my personal best of about 200 28mm scale minis in a month, especially as I can churn out zombies pretty quickly. This batch is just started, you can see a few have the skin blocked in as I was using up the last of the paint on the pallet.
I've also put together ANOTHER 40 Zombies using the rising from the ground parts on the sprues, but then I ran out before getting a full 60. I'm planning on doing a large block of skeletons, but ran out of lipped bases so they are on order.

| So much rimming... |
I'm looking forwards to getting to the Picts, despite still not having put last years on the table yet. Maybe because I know how quickly I'll be able to get through them. Small victories ya know.
In other news, a couple of rulebooks turned up today, I picked up the Macedonian and Punic Wars supplement, as I have the base rules already, and I'm toying with the (new project) a multibased 15mm Celt/Gaul army that I could also use for Hail Caesar or whatever, and I figured I'd grab the Legions of Battle one because it probably has a similar basing scheme, so I should be able to run the same force for both. Here's hoping. My Northstar order is also out for delivery, so hopefully I'll have the last figures for my OG&M force soon.
On the subject of projects, my first painting one took a hit today, as a surprise Grymkin CID (Community Integrated Development) just landed, adding a few new options to the army, that hopefully should be released this year.

| Some light reading. |
And to finish off, here's a quick shot of the minis I've rattled through already. 60 Zombies including a Leader, Musician and Standard Bearer, a Necromancer, and 4 Grave Markers/Objectives. Hopefully I'll have another full unit of Zombies added soon enough. Now, you'll have to excuse me whilst I go froth over the Grymkin CID update.
Cheers,
John
